Final Fracking Hearings Sept 13, 15 in Binghamton
Binghamton will host the last "fracking" hearing scheduled by the EPA, and officials aren't particularly happy about it. The series of hearings has been going on in the Twin Tiers and elsewhere, and this one was originally set to happen nearly a month ago at Binghamton University.
Officials moved that hearing to Syracuse at the last minute because university officials tacked on quite a bit of extra money for the feared security problems from protesters. Syracuse officials pulled the chair out from under the EPA, saying they could not arrange security on such short notice.
There will actually be two meetings this time, and they are both at the Broome County Forum Theater in Binghamton. They start at 7pm the evenings of September 13th and 15th. As you know, opponents fear hydraulic fracturing, which releases gas in deep shale, will endanger water supplies.
Chemung County Y Has New Child Care Director
There is a permanent child care director at the Chemung County YMCA. You may remember, in May the Y faced numerous violations of state care standards. Officials have also had trouble staffing a child care director. After the summer of trouble, the Y Board of Directors has chosen a permanent director. She's Linda Bedford. Previously, Bedford was the School Aged Child Care Coordinator at the Y in Horseheads. In her new role, she will supervise the care staff for infants through school-age children.
The buckets full of unused medicines collected over the weekend at the West Elmira and Southport fire stations looked like they were filled with candy. But what was inside was certainly no children's plaything. Getting prescription medicine out of bathroom cabinets, off counter tops and out of the reach of children was one of the goals of the event, dubbed "Pharmaceutical Waste Day."
